Veloci come Annica non ce n’erano altre! Il caposquadra la osservava meravigliato! Cernendo, le dita volavano sopra il materiale, sembrava suonare una sinfonia al pianoforte! Sarà forse stato per la lunga pratica con i legumi? Il materiale buono da una parte e quello cattivo dall’altra! Un giorno era andato ad ammirarla perfino il padrone della miniera! Non che le altre donne fossero molto più lente. Ma Annica era davvero una meraviglia, e andava d’accordo con le compagne, erano sempre allegre chiacchierando o cantando, e non si fermavano mai! Gli uomini a cernire non erano proprio capaci! Avrebbero forse ricevuto una paga superiore per tutto quel lavoro pesante? Sempre inchinate a pancia e piedi bagnati. Ma non era ancora tempo di parità di diritti, le donne dovevano accontentarsi della metà della paga che ricevevano gli uomini!

There was no one as fast as Annica. The foreman marvelled as her fingers flew over the material as if she were playing a symphony on the piano. Was it the result of years spent sorting legumes, placing the good on one side and the bad on the other?
Even the owner of the mine came one day to see her in action. Not that the other women were much slower, but Annica was truly remarkable. She got along well with her companions; they were always chatting or singing, never stopping.
The men assigned to sifting weren’t nearly as capable. Yet would they be paid more for all that hard work? Always bent over, bellies pressed down, feet soaked. But it wasn’t yet the time for equal rights, women had to settle for half the pay men received.
