LA FLUORITE TAGLIA I POLMONI (ITA)
Fumo, tanto da non vedersi neanche a bestemmiare! E puzza! Quando Efis faceva brillare le mine per estrarre la fluorite, il fumo riempiva tutte le gallerie, così quando il secondo turno andava giù per raccogliere il materiale, sembrava di essere all’inferno, almeno finché non istallarono gli aspiratori per il fumo. Quanta gente si ammalò! La fluorite era peggio del piombo, perché “tagliava” i polmoni, così si diceva! E quanti ne morirono! Il materiale era dei migliori, la fluorite era il 99%. Si lavorava otto ore al giorno, compreso il sabato. Prendevamo venti/venticinque mila lire al mese! Dovemmo scioperare per avere sabato libero e 14 esima mensilità!

Smoke so thick you couldn’t even see well enough to curse! And the stench was unbearable.
When Efis blew up the mines to extract fluorite, smoke filled every tunnel. By the time the second shift went down to collect the material, it looked like hell. This was at least until they later installed ventilators to remove the smoke.
So many people fell ill. Fluorite was said to be worse than lead, they claimed it “lacerated” the lungs, and so many died!
The material itself was top quality fluorite at 99% purity. We worked eight hours a day, including Saturdays. Our pay? Twenty to twenty-five thousand lira a month.
We had to strike just to win a free Saturday and a Christmas bonus.
